A stump left behind is a mower obstacle, a trip hazard on the way to the dock, and a slow invitation to carpenter ants. Grinding it out is quicker and cleaner than digging it, and the spot can be filled, seeded or planted right after. The sandy soil around Hale and the lakes grinds easy; the clay and cobble west toward Lupton and West Branch takes longer, and we price for it.

MISS DIG and lake lots
We file a MISS DIG 811 locate before every grind, at least three business days ahead, so gas, electric and cable lines are marked before the wheel goes below grade. It is Michigan law and it is free.
Within 500 feet of a lake or stream, Michigan's soil erosion rules can require a permit from the county before soil is disturbed. Most single-stump grinds on a flat lawn do not need one; work on a bank, or a bigger grind with grading afterward, can. We tell you when it applies.

Locate, then grind
MISS DIG marks the utilities, at least three business days out. Then the stump is ground below grade and the roots chased as agreed.

Do you really call MISS DIG for a stump?
Yes, every time. Michigan law requires a MISS DIG 811 locate at least three business days before any below-grade digging, and a stump grinder goes below grade. The locate is free and marks gas, electric, phone and cable lines. It also means a grind is never a same-day job unless the locate is already in; plan on a few days between the estimate and the grinder.
My lot is on the lake. Is anything different?
Sometimes. Michigan's soil erosion rules say that disturbing soil within 500 feet of a lake or stream can need a permit from the county. A single stump ground and raked back in on a flat lawn usually does not trip it; grinding a row of stumps on a bank above the water and grading afterward can. We tell you when it applies and how to get it, and we keep grindings out of the water either way.
Can the grinder get through my gate?
Usually. Our stump grinder fits through most gates and between most cottages, and it can be walked in where the truck cannot go. Send a photo of the narrowest spot on the way in and we will tell you before the estimate.
