Trees and lots around Hale
The high ground around Hale is sandy pine country: jack pine and red pine, with red oak and aspen mixed through it and ash crowding the low wet spots between the lakes. Right on the shorelines it is mostly cedar, leaning out over the water the way cedar does. In town, the older lots along M-65 have the big yard maples that were planted when the houses went up, and plenty of them are now bigger than the yards they stand in.
A lot of the cottages on the Hale lakes were built decades ago with the trees left standing close to the house. Those trees are now over the roof, over the septic field and over the neighbor's cottage. We use the bucket truck to take them down in pieces from above instead of dropping them whole, which is the only sensible way to work on a lot where the next cottage is 20 feet away.
Oak wilt, ash borer and dead pines
Oak wilt is confirmed in Iosco County. The DNR asks that nobody prune or wound oaks between April 15 and July 15, when the beetles that carry the fungus are active, and we hold to that. If you have oak work around Hale, winter is the right time for it. Red oaks that catch oak wilt can die within a season, so if you see an oak losing leaves in midsummer, call and we will look at it.
Emerald ash borer has been through the whole state, and the ash in the lowlands around Hale are mostly dead or dying. Dead ash goes brittle fast. It is not a tree to climb, and it is not a tree to leave standing over a driveway. The same goes for the dead red pines and jack pines you see going brown on the ridges: they hold together for a while, then they do not. Dead tree removal is a large part of what we do out here.

One thing to know about power lines: Consumers Energy treats the service drop, the wire from the pole to your house, as the homeowner's responsibility. If a tree is down on that wire, Consumers can do a temporary disconnect so we can work safely. We coordinate that with them; you do not need to sort it out yourself.
Lake-lot rules to know
If your lot is within 500 feet of a lake or stream, which covers most of the cottage lots around Hale, stump grinding and any grading that disturbs the soil can require a soil erosion permit from Iosco County. We know the rule and will tell you up front whether your job needs one. We also file a MISS DIG 811 locate before every stump grind, which takes three business days, so build that into the timeline.
