Pines, the river and the old base
The country around Oscoda is Huron National Forest pine on the private lots too: tall red pines planted in rows decades ago and jack pine that seeded itself. Both die standing, go brown, and then start dropping tops. The neighborhoods around the former Wurtsmith base have older planted trees that have gotten big for their lots. Along the Au Sable, Foote Dam Pond and Van Etten Lake, the lots carry cedar and hardwoods that lean toward the water.
Lot clearing is steady work here: cabin sites near the river and the lake, wider driveways, and thinning pine stands so the good trees have room. We take out what is in the way, chip the brush, and grind or pull the stumps.
The June 2024 wind event
On June 25, 2024, a statewide wind event left a cluster of Consumers Energy outages near Oscoda along Lake Huron, with roughly 3,000 Iosco County customers in the dark. Storm calls from Oscoda are usually the same story: a pine on a roof, a tree across the driveway, a limb on the service drop. Oak wilt, ash and dead pine
Oak wilt is confirmed in Iosco County. We do not prune or wound oaks between April 15 and July 15, which is the DNR window, so oak trimming around Oscoda goes on the winter schedule. Emerald ash borer has killed most of the ash in the lowlands along the river, and those dead trunks are brittle. We take them down from the bucket rather than climbing.
Water and permits
Most lots in Oscoda and Au Sable are within 500 feet of a lake or river, so stump grinding or grading can require a soil erosion permit from Iosco County, and the Au Sable has Natural Rivers rules on top of that. We check what applies before we quote. Every stump grind gets a MISS DIG 811 locate first, which takes three business days. A large share of the places here are seasonal, and we are used to quoting from photos and working while the owner is downstate.
