The March 2025 ice storm
Alcona County was one of the counties under the state emergency declaration for the ice storm of March 28 to 31, 2025. Ice loaded the pines and the hardwoods until they broke, power was out for weeks in places, and hundreds of thousands of acres of forest were damaged across northern Michigan. Around Glennie, that means there are still cracked leaders, hanging limbs and half-broken tops sitting in the trees over camps and cabins. Those hangers do not come down on their own on a nice day; they come down in the next wind. Camps and cabin lots
Most of the work in Glennie is for camp and cabin owners: a dead red pine leaning toward the roof, a lot to clear for a new cabin or a wider drive, storm wood to buck up and haul off. We clear the building site, chip the brush, and grind or pull the stumps so the site is ready. A large share of the places around Alcona Pond and Vaughn Lake are seasonal, so we are used to quoting from photos and working while the owner is away.
Oak wilt and dead trees
Oak wilt is confirmed in neighboring counties, and the DNR no-prune window for oaks is April 15 to July 15 statewide, so we keep oak trimming around Glennie to the dormant season. Emerald ash borer has been through the whole state, and dead ash in the lowlands is brittle enough that we take it down from the bucket, not by climbing. Dead jack pine and red pine are the same story: fine for a year, then dropping tops.
Water, stumps and the wires
Lots on Alcona Pond and Vaughn Lake are within 500 feet of the water, so stump grinding or grading can require a soil erosion permit from Alcona County. We check before we quote. Every stump grind gets a MISS DIG 811 locate, which takes three business days. If a tree is on the wire from the pole to the cabin, we arrange a temporary disconnect with your utility before we cut; under Consumers Energy's rules that service drop is the homeowner's responsibility, and the other utilities up here work much the same way.
Getting there
Glennie is about 40 minutes from our home base in Lupton, up through Hale and M-65. It is beyond the 25-mile mark where a travel fee can apply, but we come out for removals, storm work and lot clearing, and we group Glennie jobs together where we can.
