The 2018 storm and what it left behind
On August 28, 2018, straight-line winds near 80 miles an hour came through East Tawas, Tawas City and Alabaster Township and flattened trees by the dozen. One property on Henry Road lost more than 70 trees in that one storm. Years later, the leftovers are still around: trees that were pushed partway over and rerooted at an angle, cracked leaders that never fell, and root plates that lift a little more every wet spring. If you have a tree in East Tawas that has leaned since 2018, that is worth a look before the next big blow.

Working between houses in town
East Tawas lots are close together, and the big maples and oaks in the older neighborhoods are usually boxed in by a house, a garage, a fence and a service drop. The bucket truck lets us take those down from the top in short pieces and lower them where we want them. We chip the brush on site and haul the wood unless you want it left for firewood.
Oak wilt is confirmed in Iosco County, so oak pruning in East Tawas is winter work; the DNR window to stay off oaks runs April 15 to July 15. Dead ash from emerald ash borer are common in the low ground behind town and along the creeks. They get brittle and should come down from the bucket, not by a climber.

Properties along the bay and out toward Tawas Point sit within 500 feet of the water, which means stump grinding or grading there can require a soil erosion permit from Iosco County. We know the rule and will tell you if your job triggers it. Every stump grind also gets a MISS DIG 811 locate, which takes three business days. If a tree is down on the wire from the pole to your house, Consumers Energy can do a temporary disconnect so we can work safely; we arrange that with them.
