Sand Lake is one of the most tightly packed cottage lakes in Iosco County. The lots are narrow, the cottages are close, and the trees between them are big: red pine, red oak, aspen and cedar that were left standing when the places were built and have grown over the roofs since. National City, just down the road where the townships meet, has more year-round homes and bigger yards with the same trees. Working between the cottages
On Sand Lake, a tree removal is rarely a simple drop. There is a cottage on either side, a deck out front, a shed out back and a service drop overhead. We take those trees down from the bucket truck in short pieces, lower what needs lowering, and keep the mess to your lot. Cedar on the shoreline is the other common job: it leans out over the water, it grows into the dock, and it is best trimmed back rather than removed if it is holding the bank.
A large share of the places around Sand Lake are seasonal. We quote from photos, do the work while you are downstate, and send pictures when it is done. If you would rather walk the lot with us, we can meet you on a weekend.
Storm history on Sand Lake Road
When the August 28, 2018 straight-line winds came through Iosco County, trees came down along Sand Lake Road along with the rest of the Tawas area. The pines on these lots are tall and shallow-rooted in the sand, and they are the first to go when a storm crosses the lake. The storm line is (989) 305-9731, answered 24 hours a day in storm season. Trees on cottages and across the lake roads come first. If one is on the wire from the pole to the cottage, we get Consumers Energy to do a temporary disconnect before we cut.
Oak wilt and dead trees
Oak wilt is confirmed in Iosco County, so we do not prune oaks around Sand Lake between April 15 and July 15, the DNR no-prune window. Winter is oak trimming season. Dead red pine and dead ash from emerald ash borer both go brittle standing; both should come down from the bucket, and neither should be left hanging over a roof for another season.
The 500-foot rule
Nearly every lot on Sand Lake is within 500 feet of the water, which means stump grinding and any grading that disturbs the soil can require a soil erosion permit from Iosco County. We know the rule and tell you up front if your job triggers it. Every stump grind also gets a MISS DIG 811 locate first, which takes three business days.
Getting there
Sand Lake and National City are about 30 minutes from our home base in Lupton, over through Hale. It is a regular run for cottage removals, trimming and storm cleanup.
