Alcona County was under the state emergency declaration for the March 28 to 31, 2025 ice storm. Along the shore and back into the woods around Harrisville, ice broke tops out of pines, split hardwoods and left power out for weeks in places. Much of that damage is still in the trees: cracked leaders, hanging limbs, pines bent over and never straightened. Those are the trees that come down in the next wind, and taking them out on your schedule is a lot cheaper than taking them off your roof. Lake Huron wind shapes everything on the Harrisville shore. Cedar leans out over the bank, hardwoods grow lopsided away from the water, and the tall pines behind the cottages are the first to go in a storm. Shoreline trimming is careful work, because the cedar is often what is holding the bank; we trim back from the cottage rather than remove when that is the case. In town, the big yard maples come down from the bucket truck in pieces between the house and the wires.
Oak wilt is confirmed in neighboring counties, and the statewide DNR no-prune window for oaks is April 15 to July 15, so oak trimming around Harrisville is dormant-season work. Emerald ash borer has killed the ash in the lowlands, and those brittle trunks come down from the bucket, not by climbing. Lots within 500 feet of the lake or a creek can need a soil erosion permit from Alcona County before stump grinding or grading, and every stump grind gets a MISS DIG 811 locate, which takes three business days.
