Bay-shore trees and low ground
The wind off Saginaw Bay shapes the trees along the shore in Au Gres, and the wet ground behind it grows ash faster than anything else. Emerald ash borer has been statewide for years, and the ash lowlands around Au Gres are now full of standing dead trunks. They are brittle, they drop limbs without warning, and they should come down from the bucket truck rather than by a climber. The cedar along the shore is another regular job: trimmed back from the cottage, or removed if it has gone over.
In town, the big maples on the older lots have outgrown their yards and come down in pieces between the house, the garage and the service drop.
Oak wilt in Arenac County
Oak wilt is confirmed in Arenac County. The DNR asks that nobody prune or wound oaks between April 15 and July 15, and we hold oak trimming around Au Gres to the dormant months. Red oak dies fast once infected and it spreads through root grafts, so a wilting oak in July is worth a call.

Shore lots, stumps and permits
Properties within 500 feet of the bay or a creek can need a soil erosion permit from Arenac County before stump grinding or grading. We know the rule and will tell you if it applies. Every stump grind gets a MISS DIG 811 locate, which takes three business days. A large share of the shore cottages are seasonal, and we are used to quoting from photos and working while you are away.
